Other Adventures in Australia
Perth & Freemantle
I happened to be stranded in Freemantle for 3 days. It's a story that you'll have to look at my Indonesia posts for. Freemantle is a gorgeous port city on the Western side of Australia. Having left the ship emergently, I didn't have my guidebook with me to really get the most out of the city, along with Perth...but I did discover that Perth was just a short train ride away.
Budget eats in Perth & Freemantle include The Pie Face and Hungry Jack's. They are both chains that you'll find all over. The Pie Face has several different savory hand pies that are easy to enjoy on the go. Hungry Jack's is similar to the American restaurants of Burger King or Jack in the Box.
Melbourne & Adelaide
Due to my time away from work while in Freemantle & Perth...I didn't have much time off to go explore these cities, but there is another koala sanctuary in Adelaide (albeit not as interactive as the one in Brisbane), pretty city centers, and lovely parks to walk around in.
Kangaroo Island & Tasmania
First up, the ship made a stop at Kangaroo Island. Man, that place was chilly! Maybe from the winds coming up from Antarctica? I did not see any kangaroos, but the beach was great for hunting shells. The town itself near the harbor is small and there isn't much to do in the nearby area. If you find yourself here while cruising, best to go on a ship excursion.
Sailing around Tasmania was gorgeous. The port cities were bustling with restaurants and nightlife. I must admit, I didn't have the time off work to explore much, but definitely worth another visit.
