6 Iconic Copenhagen Experiences

6 Iconic Copenhagen Experiences

I was joining a ship in Copenhagen to start working again, so I had a day to enjoy and explore the city. My cute mother was along for the ride as well. Whether you're in Copenhagen for a day, or several...these are 6 experiences you must have:

1. Pay Your Respects to Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen, a Danish author known for his fairy-tales. Most notably for other Copenhagen sites, The Little Mermaid. This statue of him is on the Radhuspladsen (City Hall Square).

2. Tivoli Gardens

Right across from the statue of Hans Christian Andersen is the fanciful entrance to Tivoli Gardens. While my day in Copenhagen didn't allow for spending time inside the amusement park. You must at least see the beautiful entrance gate.

3. Stroll along The Stroget

The Stroget is a lovely pedestrian line of streets in the old city, filled with cafes, shopping, and squares. Look up to see the unique buildings, that I definitely identify as Scandinavian.

4. Admire Danish Sculptures

Thorvaldsen's Risen Christ

Take a quick detour off of The Stroget to step inside the Cathedral of Our Lady. The nave of the church is lined with Bertel Thorvaldsen's 12 Apostles that lead to the statue of Risen Christ at the center. Thorvaldsen is a Danish sculptor who, while at his peak fame carved these incredible marble statues.

5. Picnic with Views of the Nyhavn

Nyhavn

Nyhavn

Nyhavn, the new harbor is one of the most photographed parts of Copenhagen. The harbor front is now lined with bars and cafes with outdoor seating. These places are expensive, so if you're on a budget, and even if you're not...it's quite enjoyable to pick up some street food and take a seat on the stairs...hopefully enjoying some sunshine.

6. Visit The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid of Copenhagen

The Little Mermaid of Copenhagen

It's quite a walk along the water to visit this famous lady. You can also reach her via bus or water tours. Hans Christian Andersen's version of The Little Mermaid is quite different compared to the Disney version, so I'd recommend at least reading a synopsis to fully appreciate the statue gazing out towards the ocean.

Naturally there is more to Copenhagen, but these are the experiences that I would prioritize. I'm headed back to Copenhagen in 2017 and I'm excited to perhaps add a few more sites to this list.
