Adventures on Lombok
The island of Lombok, Indonesia, is west of the more famous and more visited Bali. During my work for the cruise line, I stopped at Lombok for the day. It actually turned into 3 days due to an emergency work situation...so here's a recap of my adventures on Lombok:
Since there was not a dock in Lombok that was deep enough for our vessel, we anchored away from shore and used the tender boats to shuttle people ashore. If you're arriving in Lombok via ship, keep in mind it's an approximate 20-25 minute ride to the island.
Unfortunately, I did not have a guidebook with me to be able to utilize while I was ashore, but I ended up sharing a taxi (mini-van) with a colleague and the gentleman offered to take us on a tour of the island and then take us back to the port.
First we stopped at this religious site, since I was female, I was asked to put the red sash around my waist.
They then took us to another water temple outside of the city. Traffic was actually pretty crazy...don't try driving yourself.
Then, due to my work emergency, I stayed on Lombok for 2 nights. I had what we call the "port agent" with me, but he didn't live on Lombok to be able to really show me around. However, he took me to the island's most touristy beach, Sengigi. It was serene and parts were rugged. There were a couple restaurants and resorts.
I stayed at the Lombok Garden Hotel, in the heart of Mataram (the capital city). It was a great hotel for the price and a short walk away from the shopping mall that has a grocery store and a few chain restaurants.
I flew out of Mataram's airport to Bali. Hot tip: always carry Indonesian cash at the airports. There are fees you have to pay as you pass different security points.
I also had the best mango of my life on Lombok.
